CMS: Welcome to Modern Web Design
CMS, Content Management System. Wordpress, Joomla!, Drupal, Pixie, or even just gApps.
Which CMS is right for you?
- WordPress. Hi, I’m perfect for almost everyone. I’m one of the oldest CMS-s around, and I’m certainly the best supported. I have a million free themes and plugins, and I’ll always be ready for the newest new craze (who could have seen Twitter coming?). I was built for blogging software originally, but I’m so much more than that now.
- Joomla! Greetings. Looking for a cleaner look than WordPress? Want something less people will be able to copy? Not planning on ever having a blog? I might be what you want. I’m a solid choice. A little less friendly than WordPress, but I’ve got my upsides. For e-commerce I might be your best choice, or for a complex website that will be used on an intranet or have lots of contributors.
- Drupal. I’m the most powerful software around. Some people think I’m a bit like using a machine gun on a mosquito– so if you’re not looking for complexity stick with WordPress. But if you’re investing in a serious longterm solution, I might be the one for you.
- Pixie. I’m new, I’m dirty, and I’m hott with two t’s. Not for the feint of heart… but if you wanna stand out from the crowd I might be for you. I’ll steal your heart, but I can’t promise a long term relationship the way Drupal and WordPress can. Handle with care!
- Google Apps. Quick. Solid. Reliable. Gets the job done. I. Am. Google. Do you need something up tomorrow? Not looking for a million pages or categories or authors… just something to get that information out to those people? Yeah, I can do that. Solid under any circumstances, use me when it needs do’n.
And there’s more! Wiki’s, private social networks, educational training software, personal blogs — the right CMS is out there for you. Don’t settle for another Flash brochureware website, or crusty Dreamweaver design. The 90s are gone, and the 00′s with them. A good CMS will last you until we’re browsing the internet from our jetpacks in the ’20s.
